What do you get when you cross 160 children in matching sweatsuits with a Zhenjiang "Scenic Spot?" KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIP!!!! The children arrived early yesterday morning (Friday April 17) and packed their shu bao (book bags) with all kinds of snacks and a sheet of newspaper to substitute for a picnic blanket. All the teachers, students, and custodial staff rode a bus to the other side of Zhenjiang. Pictured above (from a bad angle--sorry) is me with Alex. What a stud! He is a little shy, but very smart and enthusiastic about learning.
I was with the Narcissus children (above), the five- and six-year-olds in Tracy's class. (They are probably my smartest class. One kid, Tom, told me in English that my glasses were funny! :) He is one of the few kids who actually understands the English he speaks, instead of purely memorizing words and phrases with their corresponding translations.) Throughout the morning, we walked around the mountain, posed for picture after picture, and ate snack after snack. There was a pattern: take a picture, walk, eat, walk, take a picture, walk, eat...The children were all so eager to share their snacks with me. My arms were literally overflowing with seafood-flavored potato chips, candy, sausage, and cakes. How could I refuse their generosity? They fought over who got to hold my hand as we walked around!
The morning culminated with Chicken McNuggets and Banana Pies from good old McDonald's. Back down the mountain we hiked, back onto the bus we climbed. All in all, it was great fun!
