Kids Love Music!

     At Starfish, Meilina and I were responsible for carrying out a few small projects like making new name tags for the children and organizing the art supplies closet.  My favorite project we did was recording English songs for future volunteers. We taught the children 10 songs (in English--Chinese volunteers will eventually do same in Chinese) and then recorded ourselves singing with the children. The director of Starfish hopes that future volunteers can see the videos we made (via the starfishvolunteers Youtube channel) and sing the same, familiar songs with the kids.

     Since Meilina is a music ed major, this was right up her alley. She knows so many songs with child-friendly lyrics and corresponding actions. Music really is a universal language; all the kids love it, no matter how old they are or what special needs they have. Sometimes we gathered the kids together to sing group songs like "Ring Around the Rosie" and sometimes we sat the little babies on our labs and did finger play songs like "The Itsy, Bitsy Spider." We had so much fun singing with the kids!
